"Gius" stressed the importance of knowing how adults learn because as school nurses, not only do with teach children, we teach adults. When working with staff and parents, there are many opportunities where our nursing knowledge and expertise are needed. Adults take time to think through and process information. School nurses were asked, "Can you tell by looking at someone their literacy level?".
School nurses learned that at any given time only 30% of students (children & adults) are listening during a lecture or discussion. The other 70% are taking a "mental nap", thinking about the past or future. It is for this reason as well as knowing different learning styles that presentations should vary in delivery. Visual and active activities should be incorporated to engage the learners and keep them interested in the topic.
Various presentation skills were discussed along with some common mistakes that presenters make. It is important to know how you are conveying your message and Gius suggested recording yourself or giving a "pre" presentation to a few different people in order to get feedback on your style of presenting. Even the best presenters practice and make changes to their presentation right up to or during their presentation. They feed off the cues of the audience, in order to know the direction the presentation should go. Oh, and don't use medical jargon or acronyms!
A great presentation that provided a lot of insight to presenting.
Thank you Gius!
