Dawn Massabni from the Don't Shock Me Foundation presented the importance of raising awareness of the prevalence and prevention of Toxic Shock Syndrome. Don’t Shock Me is a non-profit (501C3) foundation dedicated to heightening awareness of toxic shock syndrome (TSS). It was created in honor of 19-year-old Maddy Massabni, who lost her life to TSS on March 30, 2017. The mission of this organization is dedicated to heightening awareness as well as to educate men and women on Toxic Shock Syndrome. Ms. Massabni has been an activist to initiate legislation in the state of New Jersey: With the passing of this legislation, the Commissioner of Health shall establish a public awareness campaign to inform the general public about toxic shock syndrome. The campaign shall include, at a minimum, information about the symptoms of toxic shock syndrome and the most effective means of prevention. Dr. Nader Nakhleh, Pediatric Pulmonologist, along with Marie Chisvette, MSN, RN-BC, Population Health Manager/COACH Program, both from Hackensack Meridian Health reviewed the symptoms of asthma in children with an emphasis on a step-wise approach. The step wise approach as Dr. Nakhleh and Ms. Gonzalez stated, is a guide to determine the best medication regimen for optimal pulmonary functioning for quality of life. They reviewed initial assessment, education, and medication regimens. They mentioned the difference between rescue and maintenance medication for asthma. They emphasized the risks for death from asthma and how it can be prevented with medication management and follow up with a health care provider.
