Jennine Orgo, scholarship committee and last year recipient announced there were 3 scholarships awarded. One to a certificate student and two doctoral candidates,
Giuesppina Pagnotta introduced the winner of the certificate candidate winner who is attending the Monmouth University program, Carissa Borgia. Laura Jannone introduced the the two Doctoral candidate winners. first winner attending Kean University is Colleen Nauta who is doing a thesis on Techno Stress in nurses. The second winner is the MCNSA vice president and attending Monmouth University AnneMarie DelleDonnewho is doing her study on EVERY STUDENT COUNTS.
Our Guest speaker for the evening was Summer Deaver, BFA, E-RYT 500 who educated us in Mindfulness in the School setting. Summer is the Executive Director of Yoga Peace Kula, 50`(c)3. Summer applies her 17 years of teaching experiences in Yoga and Mindfulness to lead Yoga Teacher trainings and Mindfulness programs, and present as a keynote speaker. She seres on the Board for the Howell Prevention Alliance and Steering Committee for Social Emotional Learning in NJ.
Summer has lead yoga and meditation retreats around the world including in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka, and Costa Rica. During her 12 years in NYC she taught and created several teacher training programs, served as a lead teacher for the Lineage Project, bringing awareness practices to marginalized and incarcerated youth with extraordinary individuals in the field of yoga and mindfulness.
Summer studied in India with the Dalai Lama and numerous leaders in the field of Mindfulness and Buddhist Psychology. She has served as Director of Seven Arrows Retreat Center and Farm in Rumson, NJ prior to joining Yoga Peace Kula. She is a Reiki Master Teacher and has completed a year long program in trauma sensitive healing techniques, called Master Healers. In addition she continues in what has been a 13 year study and practice in the Dzogchen Buddhist Tradition.
Summer is a passionate or fierce advocate for the application of mindfulness in schools as the implementation technique for Social Emotional Learning. She believes fervently in the power of true presence, and brings daring, loving kindness to her work and mentorship with community members and professionals of all kinds through compelling speaking engagements, workshops, individual sessions and retreat experiences,
Summer spoke of mental, physical and emotional health are all intertwined. There is an awareness that the basic state of goodness, wellness and wholeness is nonjudgmental Society is in a culture of PTSD, anxiety and depression. Students see everything and want to be seen. Summer also taught us awareness by having us take deep breaths so that we inhale to extend our bellies, to be aware of our own selves, to be present.
Her presentation was enlightening and had the attendees captivated with her soothing voice and gentle demeanor.
