The New Jersey Teacher of the Year Program and the Governor's Teacher/Educational Services Professionals Recognition Program have been integrated into the Governor's Educator of the Year Program. Annually, schools throughout the state have the opportunity to nominate individuals for the "Teacher of the Year" (TOY) and "Educational Service Professional of the Year" (ESP). Building/District Colleagues then vote for an individual to receive such awards. The award recipients receive an array of items that are district-specific. Items like $500 class/office wish list purchases, flowers, recognition parking space for a year, ability to attend an added external professional development workshop, etc. could be received by the awardee. What is standard for all recipients - is having name noted on some type of plaque/school marquee and a recognition ceremony at a school board meeting. District schools can then submit names of the recipients to the County Superintendent's office, to attend a recognition dinner and/or ceremony before the end of the school year. Beyond this level, there is opportunity for those nominated for "Teacher of the Year" for selection as "County Teacher of the Year", then possibly "NJ Teacher of the Year" and onto the "National Teacher of the Year". 2018-2019 Recipients
CATHY GRANO, MSN, RN, CSN School Nurse, Co-Lead Nurse MCSNA Member Port Monmouth Elementary School, Middletown Township Public Schools ESP Recipient I obtained my BSN from Christopher Newport University in 1998 and have been a RN for 21 years. In 2009, I obtained my School Nurse Certification at Rutgers University and in 2015, my MSN from Monmouth University. I worked for 14 years in maternal child health before transitioning to school nursing. I have been in my present position for 10 years and continue to teach childbirth classes, helping to prepare new parents for their biggest and most rewarding job - child rearing! I am so grateful to be working as the School Nurse in a GEM of a school in Middletown. Not only do I get to see our 5 year old students grow into more mature 5th graders but I get to know the families as well. In addition to seeing to the health needs of our students, we actively seek ways to promote health holistically through wellness initiatives and food programs. To steal a quote, “Healthy Children Learn Best”, which is a concept that I try to promote each and every day. CLAIRE BENTLEY Freehold Regional School District MARIA MONTANEZ Rumson Borough School District | BARI BRADLEY, RN, BSN, CSN School Nurse Wall Central Elementary School ESP Recipient I graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1985 with a BS degree in Nursing. I worked as an ICU nurse for 4 years, then worked in a school for students with disabilities for 3 years. During this time I attended Caldwell College and obtained my Certified School Nurse Certification. I have worked at Central School for over 25 years. I still love my job after all of these years and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I am so honored to have been recognized by my co-workers, students and parents and to have received this wonderful award. IRENE ROAKE Freehold Regional School District LISA FRANCIOSI Monmouth County Vocational School District After contemplating medical school, I decided that Nursing would allow me more time to spend with patients on every level. I graduated from William Paterson School of Nursing in '89 and began my career at The Children's Hospital of NJ in Newark, always knowing that I wanted to work with children. After a few years of staff nursing in general peds, I worked in and became charge nurse of 21 pediatric specialty clinics, while starting graduate school at Rutgers for a maternal/child path. Following the Children's Hospital closure and the heightened incidence of HMO's and RN layoffs, my career took a different path and my time was utilized working for a Nursing organization that focused on better working conditions for nurses and licensed technical professionals, lobbying Trenton for mandatory staffing regulations and other related issues. However, after almost 9 years, I needed to work with children again and found my way to the school systems where I have worked with special education since 2005. It is honor to receive the Governor's ESP award which would not have been possible if it wasn't for the amazing staff, administration, and students I get to work with every day at the Career Center. | ANNETTE LANGER Matawan Aberdeen Regional School District KRISANNE ZAJAC Rumson Borough School District |
