Dr. Moshe Roth, Pediatric Developmental Optometrist presented at our November meeting
Dr Roth explained that ADHD could be misdiagnosed for a vision problem.”If someone cannot visually focus, how could they mentally focus?” A child may exhibit behaviors because he/she is not able to focus visually. Children should have vision testing starting in preschool and possibly sooner.
Eye charts only test acuity. Other testing measures may be needed check for other vision problems. Dr Roth informed us, “that only 5% of visual problems are detected with a Snellen eye chart”! Dr. Roth went over the various types of physicians that address vision and what their specialties are.
School nurses were challenged with Dr. Roth’s demonstration to drive home the point about eye convergence, focus, tracking and letter/word reversal.
It is important that children have vision exams from physicians that address learning needs for students in order to success in school.
Dr. Roth wants us to remember that Vision is virtual “touch”.
Visual function and structure.
Fixate, follow, fuse and focus
